Review: Kotosh (Peruvian/Japanese) Restaurant

January 6th, 2010 by Nakioki received No Comments »

I know, right? Peruvian food with Sushi? That’s like something I would never think of. Two food that will make you full like nothing. But it isn’t all bad… Of all the places I been wanting to go and try out, Kotosh was interesting. So I HAD to go there and check it out. So if you sit back and relax here’s my “First” review of the place.

Kotosh
2408 Lomita Blvd.
Lomita, Ca 90717

Yes, first review. Why you ask? Because I feel that I need to come back and do more. But enough of that and let’s get to it. Kotosh is rather interesting place, place where you can eat both sushi and Peruvian goodies. Kotosh is located in a small quiet plaza located just before Crenshaw blvd in Lomita Blvd. Upon entering the restaurant you will notice a small sushi bar and few table on the left if you desire eating normally. The restaurant isn’t that big nor roomy and from what I’ve read this place gets packed. As we entered the sushi bar was pretty busy and all the tables were taken. We were greeted by two waitress … although one of them told the other “I got this”.

She greeted us with a warm smile and took us to our table. We followed pass the kitchen and into a smaller room with four tables. We took our table and checked out the menu. Simple menu with pictures… that’s how I like it! First few pages were Peruvian dishes and the rest were sushi and rolls. I read about a certain dish they had here that I should try… So I already knew what I would get. That dish was Tallarin Saltado. It’s a simple dish of spaghetti, sauteed onions, tomatoes and choice of chicken, beef or fish. Of course I like fish so I chose fish. I think they used breaded tilapia on this one. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure they did. My friend ordered the same dish but in Beef and the other ordered what I believe is Pescado Frito. A dish served with rice, deep friend fillet fish, cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce on the side. We also ordered “Waterpillar” on the side to taste how their sushi rolls are. Waterpillar is basically caterpillar roll. And if you’re not familiar with that well it’s basically sushi roll consist with fresh water eel and cucumber roll topped with avocado and wasabi sauce. Just as any sushi restaurant I always have to order Uni. I have a thing with Uni. But it seems like they were out of Uni so that’s out of the list. Maybe next time.

Main dishes ranges from 9.75$ to 13.00$ depending what you get. Price may sound a little steep to you but I feel that it’s all worth it. Let’s start off with the sushi. It was delicious! Okay, well that does not say much. It was well prepared. Enough eel and avocado to satisfy your taste buds. Sushi held its place when being dipped in soy sauce unlike other places. Taking that huge bite… the flavors just explodes in your mouth. Moving on to the Tallarin Saltado … seeing the dish will remind you of chow mein. It tastes like chow mein except instead of chow mein noodles it’s spaghetti noodles which makes it a bit more slipperier (is that even a word?). The fish on it taste rather good and worked well with the green sauce. Which I’ll talk about in a bit. Tomatoes were fresh and great with this dish. It’s rather simple dish yet pretty good.

I had a bite of the Pescado Frito … well more like I had a bite of the fish that came with it. All I can say is that… It’s just darn great. Okay, that’s a bit lame but I just don’t know how else to describe it. The fish was a it salty on the site. It’s okay, I like salty food. The fish is Tilapia I assume. It was light crunchy outside yet so meaty inside. Dipping it on the “green sauce” makes it even better! Which brings me to this… The Green sauce. Just what is it exactly? You notice them in most Peruvian restaurant. They’re just so darn good and lightly spicy. They go great with any food (I hope). From what I learned this green sauce is nothing but mayo, lettuce, and pepper. Again I could be wrong, but please correct me if I am. Anyways if you read my “El Pollo Inka” review you’ll notice that same sauce in there. God I love this sauce.

All in all I think this is a great place. Small, clean, great staff, great food and great service. Definitely going to give this place another try and try out more of their sushi. And some of Peruvian dishes. You got to be careful though, Peruvian food are heavy on the stomach. Might get full right away. Also can’t beat free hot green tea. At least free for me with free refill. Oh and did I mention? Inca Cola?! They also have DIET!

Now for some pics… *Note* Please excuse my lack of pictures and the quality. My darn D90 was not in the mood to take pictures. And was not being friendly that night. Thank you…
